What we need:
We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join our growing organisation! Reporting to the Product Systems Engineering Leader, this role will lead the design and standardization of Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) infrastructure for next-generation data centers of our portfolio across the APAC region. You will own the development of Reference Designs for hyperscale and retail product tracks, ensuring scalability, cost efficiency, and compliance with global standards.
This role is pivotal in shaping advanced infrastructure solutions that enable hyperscale growth, high-density and liquid-cooled deployments, and future-ready Artificial Intelligent data center designs—while ensuring uncompromising reliability, efficiency, and sustainability, and leading continuous improvement initiatives in partnership with Operations, Construction and Delivery teams. This is a regional individual contributor role and will be based in Mumbai Office.
Key responsibilities:
Design Leadership
- Lead CSA design for hyperscale and enterprise data centers, ensuring alignment with objectives, codes, and client requirements.
- Develop concept designs, schematics, calculations, and layouts in compliance with global standards and local regulations.
- Own Reference Design development for hyperscale and retail tracks, optimizing for cost, scalability, and sustainability.
- Risk Management: Identify potential risks particularly associated with data center design elements and develop mitigation strategies to address them proactively.
- Communication: Effectively communicate design concepts, progress, and challenges to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Technical Expertise
- In-depth Knowledge on statutory and regulatory norms for setting up a data center building and data center campus.
- Deep knowledge of data center architecture, including FOH/BOH areas and specialized requirements.
- Expertise in structural systems (Precast, RCC, Steel, Composite) and ability to optimize designs for cost-efficiency, sustainability, and operational reliability.
- Strong understanding of statutory norms and municipal, local building codes (e.g. NFPA fire Codes, NMMC/TMC/BMC norms). Ensure designs are applicable to local building codes, zoning laws, and environmental regulations.
- Experience in Master Planning and site selection activities including technical due diligence, ESA1/ESA2, geotechnical investigations.
- In-depth knowledge of data center designs and designs for hyperscale customers. Ability to produce concept single lines diagrams & layouts.
- Ability to perform structural calculations, review consultant reports, and validate design integrity and compliance to standards.
- Develop detailed engineering designs, including site layouts, grading plans, structural frameworks, drainage systems, and architectural features.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough reviews of data center designs to ensure they meet Digital Edge’s requirements, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Documentation: Create and update comprehensive documentation, including design standards, design guides and technical drawings to support the design delivery team.
- Actively champion and implement policies and procedures for occupational health & safety in the workplace, information security management, environmental management systems; incident management; and comply with all legal regulatory requirements of the organization.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with industry best practices and emerging technologies in data center design and apply this knowledge to improve and optimize our data center environments.
Collaboration
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate CSA designs with MEP systems.
- Build partnerships with vendors to innovate and produce high-quality design deliverables.
- Prepare master planning and building campus guidelines, and detailed engineering documentation.
- Interaction with the customer to understand their business requirements and design the Data center. Ability to present our Designs to Customer’s SMEs and take their input for design evolution.
- Consultant and Vendor Collaboration: Work closely with external parties for design evolution, selecting the appropriate components and ensuring compatibility for construction and operations.
- DC Design Certification: Work closely with consultants to obtain certifications like TIA 942B/ Uptime, LEED, USGBC, IGBC & Statutory Certifications.
The successful candidate:
- Master’s degree in Structural engineering or related field.
- Certified Data Center Professional or equivalent.
- 10 years or more relevant design experience in APAC, including design of hyperscale data centres.
- Proven track record in hyperscale projects, structural optimization, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience in green building certifications such as LEED, WELL, or similar.
- Hands-on knowledge of modular and prefabricated construction techniques.
- Prior involvement in seismic and wind-load design considerations.
- Knowledge in design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, STAAD Pro, ETABS).
- Knowledge of building codes (e.g., IBC, Eurocodes, ACI, and ASCE standards).
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Strong project management and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Professional engineering certification is preferred.
