About the role:
Reporting to the Head of Health and Safety, the Senior Director, Operations Health and Safety provides strategic Health and Safety leadership and technical expertise across Digital Edge’s data center portfolio in APAC, working closely with Design & Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Operations, and country leadership teams to establish Health and Safety standards, embed operational Health and Safety requirements during the design phase, and continuously strengthen operational Health and Safety through capability building, assurance and lessons learned.
This role will be based in Singapore, with regular travel across Digital Edge’s regional portfolio.
Key responsibilities:
- Act as the senior Health and Safety technical authority for the design and operational lifecycle, setting strategic direction and technical standards and assurance requirements for implementation by Regional, Country and Campus teams.
- Establish Health and Safety requirements and review criteria for Design for Safety (DfS) reviews, providing expert Health and Safety input and constructive challenge to Design & Engineering, Construction, and Operations teams to ensure significant risks are identified, assessed, eliminated, or appropriately controlled through design.
- Develop and maintain Health and Safety standards, requirements, and assurance frameworks for operational readiness and live data center operations.
- Provide technical Health and Safety leadership and assurance requirements for critical infrastructure and high-risk operational activities, including electrical, mechanical, fire and life safety, high-voltage systems, energy isolation, switching, and other mission-critical hazards.
- Define and maintain assurance requirements for PTW systems and high-risk activities, and establish and monitor leading Health and Safety indicators across the portfolio, using platform-level dashboards and performance data to identify gaps, trends, and systemic risks and translate these into improvements to standards, assurance priorities, and capability programs.
- Develop and oversee Health and Safety competency and training programs for Operations personnel, including digital learning and practical onsite training, and define competency requirements for employees and contractors performing safety-critical and high-risk activities.
- Define and maintain requirements for critical electrical safety controls across the portfolio, including requirements for the review and application of arc flash studies and associated operational controls at site level.
- Partner with Operations and Facilities Management teams to strengthen Health and Safety standards, safe systems of work, and accountability frameworks across live facilities, particularly for high-risk maintenance and operational activities.
- Define Health and Safety standards and assurance requirements for internal fit-out works, supporting consistent implementation by Country and Campus teams while maintaining operational continuity.
- Review operational Health and Safety incidents, including high-potential events, to identify systemic learnings and ensure lessons are incorporated into future designs, Health and Safety standards, training programs, procedures, and operating practices across the portfolio.
- Drive cross-country learning and continuous improvement, ensuring significant Health and Safety learnings, effective controls and good practices are systematically shared and incorporated into standards, training and operational practices across Regional, Country and Campus teams.
- Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health and safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate:
- 15+ years of progressive Health and Safety experience, including significant leadership experience across the design, commissioning, and/or operations of data centers or other mission-critical facilities.
- Proven experience in Design for Safety, operational safety assurance, and risk management within large-scale, complex, mission-critical or high-risk environments, including data centers, pharmaceutical, chemical, or process industries.
- Strong technical understanding of critical data center systems and associated safety risks, including electrical, mechanical, fire and life safety, high-voltage systems, energy isolation, switching, and commissioning activities.
- Strong understanding of operational Permit-to-Work systems, high-risk work controls, electrical safety, and management of change in live operational environments.
- Experience developing and implementing technical Health and Safety standards, assurance frameworks, leading indicators, competency frameworks, training programs, and portfolio-level programs.
- Proven ability to influence senior Design & Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, and Operations stakeholders and embed Health and Safety into technical and operational decision-making.
- Strong knowledge of international Health and Safety standards, risk management principles, and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to provide Health and Safety leadership across design environments, commissioning sites, and live operational data centers, with regular travel across the region.
- Fluent in English, with the ability to work effectively across diverse cultures and regional teams.
