About the role

The Manager, Critical Facilities forms part of the Data Center Operations function and is accountable for the safe, reliable, efficient and cost-effective operation of an assigned data center building of up to 30 MW capacity. Reporting to the country leader of Data Center Operations, the role is the accountable Data Center Operations leader for the assigned data center building and owns availability, safety, operational readiness, maintenance execution, contractor performance, compliance, team capability and financial performance.

The role leads the building Critical Facilities organization, integrating Lead Critical Facilities Technicians who run the 24/7 shifts, Critical Facilities Technicians who execute frontline operations, and building-focused Critical Facilities Engineers who work business hours and join the on-call roster for major incidents into one operating team with clear decision rights, escalation paths and performance expectations. Within an assigned building up to 30 MW, the team typically totals around 18 people, comprising 3 Critical Facilities Engineers, 5 Lead Critical Facilities Technicians, and 10 Critical Facilities Technicians.

The Manager works alongside location-based Reliability Engineers and Controls Engineers who support multiple buildings. Reliability Engineers retain ownership of reliability methodology, failure-mode analysis and maintenance strategy; Controls Engineers retain ownership of controls standards, configuration governance and controls-change authority. The Manager remains accountable for safe implementation and operational execution within the assigned building.

Key responsibilities

•  Own Data Center Operations performance for the assigned building, including availability, safety, capacity, operational readiness, service continuity, energy and water efficiency, compliance and cost.

•  Lead and develop the building Critical Facilities organization, with clear accountability across Lead Critical Facilities Technicians, Critical Facilities Technicians and Critical Facilities Engineers, and effective 24/7 coverage, competency, authorization and succession.

•  Govern building operating discipline and work control, giving final approval within delegated authority for MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, ERPs, switching, permits, change records and critical work, including approving the maintenance windows proposed by the Critical Maintenance Planner in Operations Support and releasing planned work.

•  Act as building-level management incident commander for major facility events, directing escalation, customer-impact prevention, recovery and corrective-action closure, mobilizing on-call and specialist engineering support.

•  Ensure preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance is safely executed to approved reliability strategies and controls standards, with complete CMMS records, maintenance evidence, post-work validation and spare-parts controls.

•  Partner with location-based Reliability and Controls Engineers to implement cross-building requirements, maintenance improvements and approved configuration changes, preserving clear ownership between building execution and specialist governance.

•  Own building contractor and service-provider governance, including scope, competence, safety, quality, contract compliance and performance, and ensure onsite activities are effectively controlled.

•  Ensure construction, commissioning, retrofit and expansion activities are safely integrated into live operations, with risks, defects and handover actions resolved before acceptance.

•  Own building operating and capital expenditure forecasts, audit readiness and performance reporting, and escalate material risks, incidents, customer impacts and compliance gaps to the country leader of Data Center Operations.

Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate

•  Significant leadership experience in mission-critical data center operations, critical facilities, industrial plant or comparable high-availability environments, including accountability for an operating building and shift-based technical teams of around 18 people.

•  Relevant degree or professional qualification in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, facilities management or engineering management, or equivalent practical experience. CDCP, CDCS or equivalent certification is advantageous.

•  Strong working knowledge of electrical distribution, switchgear, UPS and battery systems, generators, cooling, fire protection, BMS and EPMS, with working knowledge of reliability-centered maintenance, failure-mode analysis and controls-system governance.

•  Demonstrated experience governing maintenance, switching, operational risk, permit-to-work, lockout/tagout, change management, incident response and technical recovery in a live environment.

•  Proven ability to lead 24/7 operating teams, develop technical competence and maintain disciplined execution across employees, contractors and service providers.

•  Experience with CMMS, BMS and EPMS platforms, operational reporting, audit evidence, vendor and contract administration, expenditure control and applicable safety, environmental, information security, business continuity and ISO management systems.

•  Strong English-language verbal and written communication skills, with the judgment and executive presence to lead during incidents, produce high-quality reports and engage hyperscale customers and senior stakeholders.

•  Applicable local authorization or certification for electrical switching or mechanical services operations where mandated by regulation.
