What we need:
The Lead MEP Engineer is a hands-on technical role embedded within the in-country construction team, responsible for providing mechanical and electrical engineering leadership throughout the project lifecycle, from design review and construction execution to testing, commissioning, and customer handover.
Reporting to the Project Director, this role serves as the owner's on-site MEP representative, ensuring all MEP systems are designed, installed, tested, and commissioned in accordance with Digital Edge technical standards, customer requirements, and Ready-for-Service (RFS) milestones.
The role evolves across each project phase:
• During pre-construction: Support design coordination and engineering reviews.
• During construction: Act as the resident MEP engineer responsible for QA/QC, installation oversight, and contractor coordination.
• During testing and commissioning: Drive system readiness, integrated testing, and successful handover.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pre-Construction & Design Support
- Review and provide technical input on MEP design deliverables (concept, schematic, detailed design, and IFC drawings) to ensure alignment with Digital Edge standards and the Hypercore reference design.
- Coordinate with the platform Design Delivery team and external consultants to resolve design queries, RFIs, and value engineering proposals.
- Support constructability reviews for MEP systems, identifying potential clashes, sequencing issues, and long-lead procurement dependencies.
- Participate in design review gates and provide field-informed feedback to improve design quality and buildability.
- Construction Execution – QA/QC & Resident Engineer (Primary Focus)
- Act as the owner’s MEP representative on site, providing day-to-day oversight of all mechanical and electrical installation works.
- Lead QA/QC inspections across all MEP systems – including MV/LV power distribution, UPS, generators, busway/busduct, HVAC, chilled water, fire protection, BMS/EPMS, and security systems.
- Monitor and drive MEP installation progress against the critical path schedule, flagging deviations and driving recovery actions.
- Verify contractor compliance with approved shop drawings, method statements, material submittals, and technical specifications.
- Witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and verify compliance with approved technical requirements.
- Enforce site safety standards and proper installation practices for all MEP trades, ensuring compliance with Digital Edge HSE requirements.
- Identify and escalate workmanship deficiencies, non-conformances, and design conflicts early, coordinating resolution with the Project Manager and Design Delivery team.
- Prepare and present weekly reports on MEP quality status, installation readiness, and project risks to the Head of Projects.
- Testing, Commissioning & Handover (Primary Focus)
- Lead and coordinate all T&C activities for MEP systems, working closely with the platform T&C team and specialist commissioning contractors.
- Review and validate Sequence of Operations (SOO), commissioning scripts, and test procedures for critical systems including power, cooling, fire, and controls.
- Witness and document integrated systems testing (IST), load bank testing, and failover/redundancy validation.
- Ensure all MEP punch list items and defects are tracked, resolved, and closed out prior to customer handover.
- Support preparation of as-built documentation, O&M manuals, and commissioning records for handover to Operations.
- Drive MEP readiness for customer handover aligned with technical specifications, SLAs, and business RFS milestones.
- Stakeholder & Coordination
- Work closely with the Project Manager on day-to-day site coordination, contractor management, and progress reporting.
- Coordinate with the platform Design Delivery team on design clarifications, change orders, and technical queries during construction.
- Interface with MEP contractors, equipment vendors, and commissioning agents to ensure alignment on quality, schedule, and technical requirements.
- Build strong working relationships with local authorities, utility providers, and inspection bodies as required.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, architectural, and ICT disciplines to ensure effective cross-disciplinary integration throughout project execution.
- Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering (or equivalent).
- 8+ years of experience in MEP engineering for large-scale construction projects, preferably data centres or mission-critical facilities.
- Demonstrated experience in on-site QA/QC, resident engineer, or construction supervision roles for M&E systems.
- Strong working knowledge of data centre MEP systems including power distribution (MV/LV, UPS, generators), cooling (chilled water, CRAC/CRAH, free cooling), fire protection, BMS/EPMS, and security.
- Hands-on experience supporting or leading testing & commissioning activities, including IST, load bank, and failover testing.
- Familiarity with international standards and codes (NFPA, ASHRAE, IEC, ISO) and local regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, Revit/BIM, and Excel.
- Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer, or equivalent certification is advantageous.
- Experience reviewing contractor shop drawings, technical submittals, RFIs, and method statements.
- Experience delivering projects through Ready-for-Service (RFS) or equivalent project completion milestones.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence contractors, consultants, and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced project environment.
