  • Strive: We are driven and determined.
  • Excellence: We seek to deliver the best.
  • Responsibility: We do what’s right for our people and the planet.

What we need:

The System Engineer is responsible for the hands-on delivery and reliable day-to-day operation of server, virtualisation and storage infrastructure across Digital Edge’s data centre portfolio, an estate of more than 100 physical servers supporting more than 180 critical virtual machines. As an individual contributor on a vendor-agnostic platform, the role covers physical servers, hypervisors, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), enterprise storage, storage area networks (SAN) and supporting platform services; virtual machine guest operating systems and applications remain with their owners, although the System Engineer works with them to diagnose infrastructure dependencies.

Working closely with the Principal System Engineer, the role turns approved designs into consistent, supportable deployments, carries out standard tasks and approved changes within delegated authority, and sizes routine requests independently within approved standards and thresholds. New or complex requirements, design deviations, data integrity risks and unresolved or recurring incidents are escalated to the Principal System Engineer, keeping the platform stable, secure and well documented.

Key responsibilities:

1. Server Delivery & Lifecycle

  • Build, configure and maintain servers and clusters to approved designs and build standards, verifying hardware, firmware, driver, hypervisor and out-of-band management compatibility before deployment.
  • Plan and apply hypervisor, firmware, BIOS and driver patches and updates to assigned hosts and clusters in line with approved baselines and maintenance windows, validating compatibility and rollback before each update; guest operating system patching remains with virtual machine owners.
  • Provision workload resources and deliver assigned upgrades, migrations, hardware refreshes and decommissioning, validating each handover against agreed acceptance criteria.
  • Keep asset, configuration, test and support records accurate and current for all assigned infrastructure.

2. Storage & Data Protection

  • Operate enterprise storage and Fibre Channel and iSCSI SANs, including zoning, LUN presentation, host bus adapters (HBAs) and multipathing.
  • Diagnose storage latency, IOPS, throughput, capacity and path-health issues with network engineers and vendors.
  • Where ZFS is deployed, operate pools and datasets, monitor pool health and perform approved snapshot, replication, scrub and recovery tasks, escalating redundancy, capacity and data integrity risks to the Principal System Engineer.
  • Operate backup and replication services and run scheduled restore and disaster recovery tests against agreed recovery point (RPO) and recovery time (RTO) objectives.

3. Requirements Gathering, Sizing & Performance

  • Collect workload requirements and utilisation data with service owners, covering peak demand, growth, availability and recovery needs.
  • Size routine requests independently within approved standards and thresholds, checking memory population, PCIe slot connectivity and device compatibility; prepare initial sizing for new or complex requirements under the Principal System Engineer’s technical direction.
  • Maintain performance baselines, flag capacity constraints early and implement validated tuning with documented rollback plans.
  • For approved RDMA or RoCE deployments, validate host NIC, firmware, driver and link configuration with network engineers, and collect diagnostics before escalating unresolved issues.

4. Production Operations & Incident Response

  • Own maintenance and fault resolution for assigned infrastructure within agreed service levels.
  • Resolve incidents escalated by the Remote Monitoring Center, and escalate complex, cross-site or recurring faults to the Principal System Engineer.
  • Participate in rotational on-call and planned maintenance within the 24/7 coverage model, providing timely restoration updates to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to root-cause analysis and complete assigned corrective actions by agreed dates.

5. Security & Controlled Change

  • Apply approved hardening, privileged access, certificate and vulnerability controls, and maintain audit evidence.
  • Prepare impact assessments, implementation steps, validation and rollback plans for each change, and execute changes only through the applicable change process.

6. Automation & Collaboration

  • Build and maintain operational automation using tools such as Ansible, Terraform and Python, applying version control, peer review and controlled deployment.
  • Keep Instruction Manuals, runbooks and as-built diagrams current.
  • Coordinate vendor repairs and support cases through to resolution.
  • Communicate onboarding, planned maintenance and service impact clearly to workload owners.

Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate:

  • Diploma or degree in computer science, engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, with typically 5+ years of hands-on server, virtualisation and storage experience in mission-critical environments such as data centres, cloud platforms or service providers.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one enterprise virtualisation or HCI platform (e.g. Proxmox VE/Ceph, VMware vSphere/vSAN, Nutanix or Hyper-V), including clustering, high availability and live migration.
  • Sound server hardware knowledge, including socket and NUMA layout, memory population, PCIe, NIC, HBA and NVMe compatibility, firmware lifecycle and out-of-band management (iDRAC, iLO, BMC), validated against OEM compatibility lists.
  • Practical SAN and storage skills across Fibre Channel, iSCSI, zoning, LUN presentation, multipathing, RAID, snapshots and replication, with a working understanding of ZFS.
  • Infrastructure-level Linux and Windows Server troubleshooting and solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, link aggregation, DNS, NTP, firewalls and MTU), with a working understanding of RDMA/RoCE and the ability to identify CPU, memory, storage and I/O bottlenecks.
  • Automation skills in tools such as Ansible, Terraform and Python with version control, and working knowledge of monitoring, backup testing, security controls, and incident and change management.
  • Clear communicator with accurate documentation habits and a methodical approach under pressure, able to join rotational 24/7 on-call and planned maintenance.

Preferred (advantageous):

  • Hands-on ZFS or RDMA/RoCE deployment experience; Brocade or Cisco SAN fabrics; Proxmox Backup Server; infrastructure APIs; certifications such as VMware VCP/VCAP, Nutanix NCP/NCM, Microsoft Windows Server or Azure Local, Red Hat RHCE, or storage/SAN vendor certifications.
