What we need:
This role serves as the Country Health & Safety (H&S) Lead for Japan, overseeing H&S performance across ongoing developments and future large-scale data center campuses with a planned capacity exceeding 500MW. Reporting to the Platform Head of Health & Safety, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Japan Country CEO, the role works closely with Construction, Operations, and Country Leadership to foster a strong H&S culture, ensure effective governance, and maintain regulatory compliance throughout both project delivery and operational lifecycles.
This role will be based in Tokyo and will require occasional travel to Osaka and other locations within Japan.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide H&S leadership, oversight, and governance across large-scale data center construction projects and operational facilities in Japan.
- Further strengthen safety culture across construction, live facilities, and offices.
- Collaborate with project and operations teams on high-risk activity management and mitigation strategies.
- Provide regular H&S performance updates, insights, and recommendations to the Country Senior Leadership Team.
- Consistently drive implementation of corporate H&S systems, standards and procedures.
- Actively coach ‘what good looks like’ and reinforce high standards in day-to-day execution.
- Drive disciplined implementation of actionable commitments on leading indicators across all facilities.
- Lead or review incident investigations, ensuring prompt reporting, robust root cause analysis, and application of lessons learned.
- Provide H&S input into contractor and vendor prequalification, selection, onboarding, performance reviews, and ongoing assurance activities.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with best practices.
- Develop H&S capability and leadership across project teams, contractors, and operational personnel through training, coaching, and engagement.
- Support H&S reporting for internal governance, customer requirements, and external stakeholders as required.
- Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate:
- Degree or diploma in Environmental, Health & Safety or a relevant discipline with recognized professional certifications (e.g., NEBOSH or equivalent).
- 15–20 years of progressive H&S experience, including leadership roles in large-scale construction and mission-critical or high-risk environments (e.g., data centers, semiconductor, energy, or major infrastructure projects).
- Proven ability to influence senior leaders, contractors, and project teams to achieve strong H&S outcomes in complex, fast-paced environments.
- Strong knowledge of local regulatory frameworks and international H&S standards.
- Comfortable working on active construction sites and live facilities.
- Fluent in English and a local language.
