What we need:
This role serves as the operational EHS manager for Digital Edge’s live data center portfolio in Japan, supporting safe day-to-day operations across multiple operational facilities.
Reporting to the Japan EHS Lead, the role is responsible for operational EHS execution, vendor and maintenance contractor governance, implementation of Digital Edge standards, and disciplined control of high-risk activities within live mission-critical environments.
The role works closely with Operations teams, service providers, and contractors to maintain strong operational EHS performance, regulatory compliance, and continual improvement across the operational portfolio, including assuming designated statutory EHS responsibilities, where required, under applicable local laws.
This role will be based in Tokyo, where the majority of Digital Edge’s operational sites in Japan are located, with occasional travel to other locations as required, including Osaka.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day EHS oversight across Digital Edge’s operational data center facilities in Japan.
- Work with customers, contractors, service providers, and relevant authorities on operational EHS matters to support safe operations, regulatory compliance, and consistent application of Digital Edge standards.
- Ensure robust planning, control, and supervision of high-risk activities including electrical works, energization, work at height, lifting operations, confined space entry, hot works, and energy isolation activities.
- Enforce vendor and contractor compliance with Digital Edge EHS standards, safe systems of work, permit-to-work requirements, and applicable regulatory obligations.
- Conduct routine inspections, audits, and operational risk reviews to verify compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Lead or support incident investigations, ensuring timely reporting, robust root cause analysis, and disciplined implementation of corrective actions.
- Monitor leading and lagging EHS indicators across operational facilities and drive timely closure of actions.
- Support implementation of EHS training, inductions, contractor onboarding, and competency verification processes.
- Maintain emergency preparedness across operational facilities, including drills, response coordination, and readiness reviews.
- Support implementation and maintenance of ISO management systems (e.g., ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 14064) across operational sites.
- Foster a strong, visible safety culture by coaching site teams, contractors, and service providers on expected standards and behaviours.
- Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate:
- Degree or diploma in Environmental, Health & Safety or a relevant discipline, with recognized professional certifications (e.g., NEBOSH or equivalent).
- 8–15 years of EHS experience, including operational facilities, mission-critical environments, or high-risk industrial settings.
- Strong experience managing vendors, maintenance contractors, and operational EHS activities in live environments.
- Good understanding of Japanese regulatory requirements and international EHS standards.
- Experience overseeing high-risk operational activities and contractor permit-to-work disciplines.
- Comfortable working across live operational facilities and conducting routine site inspections.
- Fluent in English and Japanese.
