What we need:

 

This role serves as the country EHS lead for Japan, providing strategic EHS leadership across Digital Edge’s operational data center portfolio and future development activities, including assuming designated statutory EHS responsibilities, where required, under applicable local laws.

 

The role partners with Construction, Operations, and country leadership to strengthen EHS culture, drive governance and compliance, and ensure consistent application of Digital Edge’s EHS standards across operational and development activities.

 

This role will be based in Tokyo, with occasional travel to Osaka sites.

 

Key responsibilities:

 

  • Provide strategic EHS leadership and oversight across Digital Edges operational facilities and future development activities in Japan.
  • Represent Digital Edge on EHS matters with key stakeholders, including customers, JV partners, contractors, and relevant authorities, supporting governance, compliance, and alignment with business expectations.
  • Further strengthen safety culture across operational facilities, development activities, and relevant business functions.
  • Collaborate with project and operations teams on high-risk activity management and mitigation strategies.
  • Communicate EHS performance to Country Senior Leadership Team.
  • Consistently drive implementation of corporate EHS systems, standards and procedures.
  • Actively coach what good looks like and reinforce high standards in day-to-day execution.
  • Drive disciplined implementation of actionable commitments on leading indicators across all facilities.
  • Lead or review incident investigations, ensuring prompt reporting, robust root cause analysis, and application of lessons learned.
  • Support EHS integration into new developments, including design reviews, project planning, due diligence, and construction readiness as required.
  • Engage in the process for contractor selection, evaluation, and performance reviews where relevant.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment with best practices.
  • Develop local EHS capabilities through training, coaching, and leadership engagement.
  • Support EHS reporting for internal governance, customer requirements, lenders and external stakeholders as required.
  • Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.


The successful candidate:

  • Degree or diploma in Environmental, Health & Safety or a relevant discipline, with recognized professional certifications (e.g., NEBOSH or equivalent).
  • 1520+ years of progressive EHS experience, including senior leadership roles across operational facilities, large-scale construction, and mission-critical or high-risk environments (e.g., data centers, semiconductor, energy, or major infrastructure projects).
  • Proven track record influencing senior stakeholders, customers, contractors, and project teams to achieve strong EHS outcomes in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Japanese regulatory frameworks and international EHS standards.
  • Experience managing EHS across both live operational environments and development activities.
  • Comfortable working across active construction sites and live operational facilities.
  • Fluent in English and Japanese.
