What we need:
The Critical Facilities Technician forms part of the Data Center Operations function and performs frontline 24/7 operations and maintenance activities that support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of an assigned data center building. Reporting operationally to the Lead Critical Facilities Technician on duty, the role monitors critical infrastructure, conducts operating rounds, responds to alarms and executes assigned maintenance and work-control activities within approved procedures and authorization limits.
The role follows approved MOPs, SOPs, EOPs and ERPs, supports switching and incident response, supervises contractors at the worksite and maintains accurate shift, CMMS and equipment records. The Critical Facilities Technician escalates abnormal conditions, procedural deviations, safety concerns and capacity risks to the Lead Critical Facilities Technician and develops competence through structured training and practical experience.
Within Data Center Operations, Critical Facilities Engineers provide building-focused engineering support during business hours and through an on-call roster for major incidents and complex technical work. The Critical Facilities Technician executes approved work under shift leadership and does not own shift command, engineering methodology, maintenance strategy, controls standards or controls-change authority.
Key responsibilities:
- Perform assigned 24/7 shift duties, operating rounds, equipment inspections, readings and alarm checks across critical electrical, mechanical, cooling, fire-protection, BMS, EPMS and associated systems, promptly escalating abnormal conditions and adverse trends.
- Execute assigned preventive and corrective maintenance tasks in accordance with approved procedures, permits, risk controls, lockout/tagout requirements and authorization limits, completing required work records and post-work checks.
- Follow approved MOPs, SOPs, EOPs and ERPs and support planned and unplanned switching, load transfers, failover conditions and emergency response under the direction of the Lead Critical Facilities Technician.
- Respond to incidents and alarms as a shift team member, taking immediate actions within training and delegated authority, supporting stabilization and recovery, and providing accurate observations and equipment data for escalation.
- Provide first-line onsite oversight of contractors and service providers, confirming compliance with access, safety, permit, procedural and worksite-control requirements and escalating deviations to the Lead Critical Facilities Technician.
- Maintain accurate shift logs, CMMS work orders, equipment readings, maintenance evidence, spare-parts records, change documentation and action tracking for assigned activities.
- Support commissioning, construction interfaces, drills, audits, inspections and operational-readiness activities assigned to the shift, protecting live operations and reporting defects or outstanding actions.
- Build operational competence through formal training, on-the-job instruction and authorization assessments, applying feedback from Lead Critical Facilities Technicians and Critical Facilities Engineers.
- Contribute field observations and operating data to procedure reviews, post-event analysis, contractor performance reviews, efficiency improvement and shift handovers, ensuring accurate and timely communication of open risks and actions.
- Support certification programs and compliance initiatives, including but not limited to SSAE 18, SOC 2, ISO 27001, and other relevant industry standards.
Actively champion and implement the organization’s policies on health & safety, environment, energy, quality, information security, and business continuity, ensuring adherence to incident reporting, legal, and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate:
- Experience in building services, electrical, mechanical, HVAC, industrial plant or mission-critical facility operations. Previous data center experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Relevant trade certificate, diploma, technical qualification or professional certification in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, building services or a related discipline. Data center certifications are advantageous.
- Working knowledge of electrical distribution, generators, UPS and battery systems, cooling systems, fire protection, BMS, EPMS or associated building infrastructure, appropriate to the assigned discipline and level of authorization.
- Experience performing inspections, readings, routine maintenance, worksite controls and safe equipment interventions in an operating environment.
- Ability to follow MOPs, SOPs, EOPs, ERPs, permit-to-work and lockout/tagout requirements accurately and consistently, with the judgment to stop and escalate when conditions differ from the approved method.
- Familiarity with CMMS, BMS or EPMS platforms, work orders, shift logs and maintenance documentation is advantageous.
- Working knowledge of applicable safety, environmental, emergency response and operational-control requirements, with a strong commitment to safe work practices.
- English-language verbal and written communication skills are preferred, sufficient to understand procedures, participate in shift briefings, report abnormal conditions and complete operating records.
- Applicable local authorization or certification for electrical switching or mechanical services operations is required where mandated by regulation.
- Ability to work a rotating 24/7 shift pattern and meet the physical and site-access requirements of the role, including working in plant areas and responding to operational conditions safely.
